Busy Weekend

As part of a three-way bike trade, I overhauled this bike, installed tubes and tires (and a new front derailleur), seat and bar tape.

It's a 58cm RaleighCompetition, with the fancy Nervex professional lugs. Really nice bike.

The same fellow who traded for the Competition (not with me, I was the broker on the deal), also bought this from me:

This is the grown-up version of the chrome 24"-wheeled Raleigh Teton I turned into my BMX cruiser.

I have a thing for chrome frames. I don't really know why, but they appeal to me.

Most of the rest of my weekend was spent working on a Super-Secret Skunkworks project. More on that, later.

Whoa. I think you have a ~1974 Raleigh Competition there. What is the serial number?

Geoffrey and Jon, If I may be of some assistance....
The Raleigh was kind of unique because the serial # was A XxXx which would make it a 1960's Nervex Raleigh.

The story behind it was that several high-end Reynolds 531 frames had gotten misplaced at the Nottingham factory and were not found until an inventory that occured in 1974. At that time they built it up as a 1974 Competition with the "new" sloped fork and decal set....Kind of a cool history behind it.

  6. Anonymous (Mark, I see you behind the curtain), thanks for the explanation. I couldn't remember the details.

Carlotte, it is orangey. It still needs some cleaning, but I'll snap a photo and post it, tonight, after I get my taxes done (o joy!).

    Thanks Geoffrey,
    I forgot about that page!
I was going by Sheldon's Retro Raleigh page which implies that
    "A XxXx" is a 1966-73.

    RLGL,
It was indeed a Huret Jubilee Der with the Jubilee cable guides at the top of the BB shell & Jubilee shifters!

I don't want to hijack Jon's thread so I'll shut up now. I included a few Nervex Pro/Jubilee closeups from it for you guys...

    Hmmm,
Those links work but you have to hold the L click and go down into the dead/blank space below to capture it all... Blogger doesn't like me!

  11. Mark: No hijacking involved. It's nice to get a discussion going.

I actually took closeups of the parts and lugs, and was planning on doing a "details" post, next.

RLGL: email me at "jjgrinder at msn dot com" and I'll send you Frankenbiker's email addy.
